His Excellency the Governor General in Council, on the recommendation of the Minister of Supply and Services, pursuant to paragraph 5.2(3)(a) * of the Royal Canadian Mint Act , is pleased hereby to make the annexed Regulations authorizing the issue of base metal coins the composition of which differs from the composition specified for those coins in

Part II of the

schedule to the Royal Canadian Mint Act .

Short Title

These Regulations may be cited as the Base Metal Coins Regulations, 1996 .

Issue of Coins

The issue of base metal coins the composition of which differs from the composition specified for those coins in

Part II of the

schedule to the Royal Canadian Mint Act is hereby authorized in the denomination set out in column I of an item of the schedule, of the composition set out in column II of that item, the standard weight set out in column III of that item and the margin of tolerance set out in column IV of that item.

Coming into Force

These Regulations come into force on July 1, 1996.

A coin of a denomination specified in column I and a composition specified in column II of an item is deemed to be of the standard weight specified in column III of that item if the coin does not vary in weight in an amount greater than the amount set out in column IV of that item, and a coin that has been in circulation shall not be deemed to fall below the applicable standard weight by reason only that its weight has diminished by abrasion through ordinary use.
